Tomato Mint Chutney (Thakkali Pudina Chutney) is a super quick chutney for idli/dosa. Though Idli/Dosa Podi is a compulsory accompaniment in my family, they do not say no to this tomato mint chutney. This is a no coconut version. Do my full chutney collection HERE

This is Chotu’s favourite. All he wants is either Sambar or this Chutney. 🙂

Now to the recipe.

Tomato Mint Chutney My Magic Pan

Tomato Mint Chutney Ingredients:

  • Onion – 1 no
  • Tomato – 3 nos
  • Mint Leaves – 1 fistful
  • Dry Chilly – 3 or 4
  • Urid Dal – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard – 1 tsp
  • Oil – 1tbsp + 1 tbsp
  • Salt – as needed

Method:

  • Heat pan with oil and roast the red chillies & keep aside. Next roast the urid dal till they are light brown. Keep this aside. Finally in the same pan saute onions for a few mins, followed by tomatoes. When they are mushy add mint leaves, stir and switch off the flame. Let it cool.

  • Once it cools grind all the roasted ingredients except urid dal into a paste. Finally add urid dal and grind in pulse mode just once or twice so that we get a coarse textured chutney. Heat pan with oil and temper with mustard seeds. Add the tomato mint chutney to this and boil for a min or two.

That’s it. Yummy tomato chutney is ready. Serve it with steaming hot idli or dosa.

My favourite is with fluffy, spongy dosa.

Tips:

  1. You can add garlic along with chopped onions and saute.
  2. You can add coriander leaves too, but I prefer to keep the mint flavour separate.
