Red Coconut Chutney is a coconut chutney made with dry red chillies. In our family, this is the default chutney that we make when we travel. We call this “Ooruku Pora Chutney”. Funny isn’t it? This stays good for a day or two if handled properly. Spicy red coconut chutney along with pillow soft idlis is a divine combo. Try making this simple yet delicious chutney.

Now to the recipe..

  • Take the roasted coconut, red chillies, salt & tamarind paste in a blender and grind it into a paste. Then finally add the roasted urad dal and just pulse it once or twice. Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida and add this to the ground chutney.

Tips:

  1. Dry roasting the ingredients and making the red coconut chutney helps it to stay fresh for a longer time, making it ideal for travel.
  2. I have added the tempering to the chutney. U can saute the chutney after tempering if u r planning to take this for a trip/travel.
  3. Adjust red chillies according to your spice levels.
