Chutney Recipes, Side Dish for Idli/Dosa
-
Onion Chutney is a simple and spicy chutney for Idli/Dosa. This is yet another no-coconut chutney that can be made in a jiffy. This is a comfy chutney to make as onions are always available in my pantry. I love to have this with idlis. It tastes best when made with sambar onions/shallots. I have used a combo of sambar onions and normal onions here!! ( Actually what I had in hand)
Now to the recipe….
[Preparation Time-5 mins : Cooking Time- 10 mins]
Ingredients:
- Sambar Onions – 1 cup (chopped)
- Red Chillies – 3 to 4
- Tamarind paste – 1 tsp
- Salt – as needed
- Sesame Oil – 1 tsp + 1 tsp
- Mustard – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – a sprig
Method:
- Heat a pan with a tsp of oil and fry dry red chillies. Once they turn brown keep it aside. In the same oil add chopped onions and fry until transparent.
- Let the ingredients cool down. Take fried onions, red chillies, salt and tamarind paste in a mixer and grind it into a smooth paste.
- Now in the same pan heat oil and temper with mustard seeds and curry leaves. Add the ground Onion Chutney to this and saute for a min. Switch off the stove.
Thats it. Spicy Onion Chutney is ready.
Serve with idli/dosa.
Tips:
- U can add 1 or 2 tbsps of grated coconut and then make the Onion Chutney.
- U can add 2-3 garlic cloves too.
- U can grind the onion chutney coarsely.
- Usually sesame oil is used to make this chutney. U can substitute with refined oil if u dont have it.
