Ellu Milagai Podi or Sesame seeds gun powder is a great accompaniment with idli/dosa. I have already posted a Dosa Milagai Podi recipe earlier. This ellu milagai podi is a slight variation, with a nutty flavour and goodness of sesame seeds. Dosa Milagai Podi is Chotu’s favourite and as far as I have seen kids love it for idli/dosa. This Ellu Milagai Podi is a great method to sneak in some sesame seeds.
Now to the recipe…
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time-20 mins]
Ingredients:
- Red Chilly – 10 to 12
- Urad Dal – 3/4 cup
- Chana Dal – 1/4 cup
- Sesame Seeds – 1/4 cup
- Asafoetida – 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
- Salt – as needed
- Oil – 1 tbsp
Method:
- Heat a pan and dry roast sesame seeds in low-medium flame. It will start popping. Keep it aside. In the same pan add a tsp of oil and roast the red chillies until brown.
- In the same pan roast urad dal and chana dal separately until golden brown.
- In the same pan add washed curry leaves and saute for a min. Switch off the flame. Let the ingredients cool down. Take a mixer and grind the sesame seeds separately in pulse mode. Just run it 3-4 times. Keep it aside.
- In a mixer add roasted red chillies (some of them are hidden under the dals), urad dal, chana dal, asafoetida, salt and grind it into a coarse powder. Then add roasted curry leaves and grind.
- To this add the ground sesame seeds powder and run it in pulse mode 1-2 times so that it combines well. Check for salt and store it in a air tight container.
Ellu Milagai Podi / Sesame Seeds Gun Powder is ready.
Mix it with gingely oil and serve with idli/dosa.
Tips:
- While roasting the ingredients, roast in low-medium flame patiently. If the dals get burnt it will spoil the taste.
- U can use whole black urad dal too. Add a handful of white urad dal along with it. This will help to find if its roasted or not.
- U can use black or white sesame seeds.
