Rava Kichdi is a very famous South Indian breakfast. It’s greasy and the soft texture literally melts in the mouth. Its different from the usual rava upma that we make.It is best when served with Tiffin Sambar and Coconut chutney. It can be given to kids as well. The vegetables that we add makes it colourful and appealing to kids.
Now to the recipe…
Rava Kichdi Ingredients:
- Rava/Sooji – 1 cup
- Onion – 1
- Carrot – 1
- Potato – 1
- Green Peas – 1/4 cup
- Green Chillies – 4
- Curry leaves – a sprig
- Moong Dal – 1/4 cup
- Mustard – 1 tsp
- Urad Dal – 1 tsp
- Oil – 2 tbsp
- Ghee – 1 tbsp
- Cashews – 5 (broken)
- Salt – as needed
- Turmeric Powder – 1/8 th tsp
- Water – 4 cups
Method:
- Pressure cook moong dal along with 1 potato for 3-4 whistles. Once cooked, mash it and keep aside. Heat a pan with ghee and roast the broken cashews and keep it aside.
- Now in the same pan, add oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, green chillies & curry leaves. Add chopped onions and fry until transparent. Now add chopped carrot and peas and saute until they are soft. To this add the mashed moon dal.
- Now add 4 cups of water, salt and turmeric powder and bring it to a boil. Add rava and mix without any lumps. Cook covered in low flame for 10 mins stirring in intervals. It should be soft and mushy. Finally add the roasted cashew and mix.
Serve hot with sambar and chutney.
Tips:
- You can dry roast the rava before using it. I used roasted rava, so skipped this step.
- Adding ghee gives it a texture that melts in the mouth. So dont skip to add..
