Capsicum Chutney – Green Bell Pepper Chutney

Chutney varieties are always welcome at home, though Chotu’s favourite is Tomato Chutney. This Capsicum Chutney is a very flavourful and delicious chutney. This is the first time I am trying this. Honestly when my mom told me this recipe, I was quite skeptical about how would it taste when I grind capsicum?!? But when I tasted it, gosh!! This has become my favorite now. The bursting flavours of capsicum and green chillies is a magical combo about this Capsicum Chutney!!

So if u doubt the taste of this Capsicum Chutney just like I did, trust me it is truly out of the world!!

Now to the recipe..




[Preparation Time – 10 mins : Cooking Time – 10 mins]


  • Green Capsicum – 2
  • Onion – 1
  • Green Chillies – 5
  • Salt – as needed
  • Coriander leaves – a handful
  • Tamarind paste – 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1 tbsp
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Mustard – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – a sprig





  • Wash and chop the capsicum roughly, make sure to remove the seeds. Likewise wash and slit the green chillies, chop the onion roughly. Heat a pan and add 1 tsp of oil. Add the urad dal and roast until golden brown. Keep it aside. In the same pan, add the chopped onion and green chillies.

  • Saute until it turns transparent. Add the chopped capsicum to it and saute. Once it becomes soft add the coriander leaves, mix and switch off the flame. Let the ingredients cool. Take everything in a mixer along with salt and tamarind paste.

  • Grind it into a smooth paste. Finally add the roasted urad dal and pulse it once or twice. Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard and curry leaves. Add the ground Capsicum Chutney and saute for a minute. Switch off the flame.

Thats it!! Flavourful Capsicum Chutney is ready!!

Serve with idli/dosa or even rice!!





  1. I would suggest using green capsicum only for making this Capsicum Chutney. Will post a different combo with red capsicum soon.
  2. Adjust green chillies according to your preference. It was a bit spicy with 5 green chillies, but we really loved it.
  3. U can add the tempering to the Capsicum Chutney as is. Adding the chutney to the tempering and saute again is optional.
