Paruppu Thogayal is a traditional chutney recipe that goes very well with rice. Paruppu Thuvaiyal and vatha kuzhambu along with papad is a wonderful combo. It is a good alternative to the usual kuzhambu and poriyal combo. I make this quite often when we are bored with the normal menu or when I dont have any veggies left.. It is an easy and quick to make thogayal, perfect for those lazy days!!!
Now to the recipe…
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time- 10 mins]
Ingredients:
- Toor Dal – 1/4 cup
- Roasted Gram (pottukadalai) – 1 tsp
- Coconut (grated) – 2 tbsp
- Salt – as needed
- Tamarind – 1/2 tsp (optional)
- Red Chillies – 3
- Oil – 1/2 tsp
Method:
- Heat a pan and dry roast the red chillies until golden brown. Keep it aside. In the same pan add 1/2 tsp of oil and roast the toor dal till slightly brown and u get a nice aroma from it. Keep this aside. Once cooled take both in a mixer.
- Grind it into a coarse powder. To this add grated coconut, pottukadalai, salt and tamarind paste. Grind it into a semi-coarse paste. Add very little water, just for the ease of grinding.
That’s it!! Simple and yummy Paruppu Thogayal is ready.
Serve with hot steamed rice and papad!!
Tips:
- U can add 1 or 2 garlic cloves for added flavour.
- Adding tamarind is totally optional. It is just our personal taste bud preference.
- U can add a few pepper corns while dry roasting the red chilles. Reduce red chillies accordingly.
- This Paruppu Thogayal is meant to be thick. Adjust water according to the consistency u prefer.
