Onion Tomato Chutney

I already have quite a few chutney varieties in my archive. This Onion Tomato Chutney is yet another easy and spicy chutney to pair with idli/dosa. When it comes to chutney, Tomato Chutney is Chotu’s favourite.. Do check my Tomato Mint Chutney as well. This version is with coconut. If u are very keen in not using coconut, u can skip it.
Now to the recipe..
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time- 10 mins]
Ingredients:
- Sambar Onion – 10 to 15
- Tomato – 2
- Grated Coconut – 3 tbsp
- Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
- Red chillies – 3
- Urad Dal – 1 tbsp
- Salt – as needed
- Oil – 1 tsp
To temper:
- Oil – 1 tsp
- Mustard – 1 tsp
- Asafoetida – a pinch
Method:
- Heat a pan with oil and roast the red chillies until brown. In the same pan roast urad dal and keep it aside. Now in the same pan, add sambar onions and saute until transparent.
- Add chopped tomatoes and saute until mushy. Finally add grated coconut and curry leaves. Mix well and saute for a minute. Let it cool. Take it in a mixer along with red chillies and salt.
- Grind it into a smooth paste. Add the roasted urad dal and pulse it once or twice. Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard and asafoetida. Add the ground chutney and saute for a few mins. Be careful as it might splutter. Switch off the flame.
Thats it!! Onion Tomato Chutney is ready!!
Serve it with idli or dosa!!
Tips:
- Adjust spice levels according to your taste buds.
- U can skip coconut if u dont prefer.
- Sambar onions taste best for this Onion Tomato Chutney. U can substitute with big onion too.
- U can add 2 or 3 garlic cloves for a different flavour.
