Paruppu Podi is an essential podi variety in any South Indian household. I would say, this is the simplest & quickest podi/powder. As u know homemade is the best, I try to stock this paruppu podi, but every time I make a batch it gets over in 2-3 days 🙂 We not only have this with rice, but also with dosa, idli, chapathi etc so no wonder it gets over..
It tastes divine when served with hot steaming rice & a dollop of ghee along with papad. An addition of any kootu variety would be a feast.
Now to the recipe..
[Preparation Time-5 mins : Cooking Time- 5 mins]
Ingredients:
- Toor Dal – 1 cup
- Red Chilly – 2
- Pepper Corns – 1 tsp
- Asafoteida – a generous pinch
- Salt – as needed
Method:
- Heat a pan & dry roast red chillies & pepper corns for a min. Add toor dal & roast it till they are golden brown. Switch off the flame & add asafoetida.

- Let it cool. Add required salt and grind it into a powder.

That’s it!! Paruppu Podi is ready…
Store it in an air tight container.
Tips:
- U can add 1 or 2 garlic pods while grinding to make the Paruppu Podi more flavourful.
- U can add a few curry curry leaves too.
