Method:

  • Heat a pan with 1 tsp of oil. Roast red chillies until golden brown. Keep it aside. In the same pan roast chana dal and urad dal until golden brown. Keep it aside. Now saute the cleaned and chopped vazhaipoo along with required salt. Sprinkle some water and cook covered until soft.

  • Once cooked add grated coconut and saute for a minute. Let it cool. Take it in a mixer along with roasted red chillies and tamarind paste. Grind it into a semi-coarse paste.

  • Finally add the roasted chana dal & urad dal. Just pulse it for 1 or 2 times. Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard, curry leaves & asafoetida. Transfer the chutney to it and saute for a couple of minutes. Switch off the flame.

Tips:

  1. U can skip the grated coconut if u prefer.
  2. Keep the chopped banana flower immersed in buttermilk, else it will turn black.
  3. U can alternatively steam cook the vazhaipoo or boil it with water too. I just preferred this method. Did not want to stain my steamer
  4. This chutney tastes best with hot rice along with sesame oil. Yumm!
