Vazhakkai Varuval / Raw Banana Fry is a simple fry with no fancy items. It pairs well with any South Indian meal combo(sambar, rasam, curd rice)I have already posted a Vazhakkai Poriyal recipe with freshly ground spices. This Vazhakkai fry does not involve any grinding though and can be made in 10 mins.
Now to the recipe…
[Preparation Time-5 mins : Cooking Time- 10 mins]
Ingredients:
- Raw Banana – 2
- Oil – 2 tbsp
- Mustard – 1 tsp
- Jeera/Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Green Chillies – 2
- Curry leaves – a sprig
- Chilly powder – 1/2 tsp
- Coriander powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
- Salt – as needed
- Rice Flour – 1 tbsp
Method:
- Peel the raw banana skin & slice into 1/2 inch discs. Heat a pan with oil & temper with mustard, jeera, slit green chillies & curry leaves. Add the sliced raw banana pieces followed by spice powders – chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder & salt. Mix well and cook in low flame for a few mins.
- Raw banana gets cooked very quickly. Once cooked, sprinkle some rice flour & fry for 3-5 mins in low-medium flame. Once it gets roasted evenly, switch off the flame.
Simple & crispy Vazhakkai Varuval / Raw Banana fry is ready.
Serve hot with rice.
Tips:
- Make sure to slice the raw banana evenly & thickly, If its too thin it will easily break.
- U can add pepper powder too.
- U can add crushed/finely chopped garlic after tempering for an extra flavour.
- Rice flour gives a nice crispy texture, so do not skip.
