Sodhi Recipe – Tirunelveli Sodhi Recipe

July 18, 2020 CoconutKuzhambu VarietiesTirunelveli Style Recipes  No comments

Sodhi is a very rich coconut milk based recipe which is native to our place (Tirunelveli). This is a must in our marriages. It is usully made on the next day of the wedding known as Maru Veedu. Our weddings are like a 3 day festival and the highlight is this Sodhi Sapadu. This is served with Inji Thuvaiyal (recipe coming next), potato fry & potato chips. Totally divine. A tip for eating this which many are not aware – It is meant to be eaten like Rasam Rice and not like Sambar Rice. Meaning you must pour more sodhi generously than the amount of rice. Eating this on a banana leaf is a trick yet heavenly. Goes well with dosa as well.

Pottukadalai Thuvaiyal is a super easy and quick thogayal recipe. Pottukadalai or Porikadalai is known as roasted gram dal in English. It tastes divine with rice and Puli Kaichal. This thuvaiyal tastes good with rice, keerai and puli kuzhambu too. This can be a handy option for bachelors. This does not involve any cooking at all as this does not even require tempering. Just grind a few ingredients and TADAA thuvaiyal ready.

Idli/Dosa Milagai Podi

January 8, 2018 CondimentsPodi/PowdersSide Dish for Idli/DosaTirunelveli Style Recipes  3 comments

Idli/Dosa Milagai Podi or Chutney Powder is an item that is always available in my pantry. It is a must for idli/dosa even if I have any number of other side dishes like Tiffin Sambar or Coconut Chutney. I make sure that a fresh batch of this podi is refilled just before the old batch gets over. It goes well when combined with gingely oil or ghee. I had posted this recipe long time back. Now have updated with new pics and video as well. Do check my collection of side dishes for idli/dosa HERE.

Potato Puttu – Urulaikizhangu Puttu

March 15, 2017 Kootu / Poriyal VarietiesPotato RecipesTirunelveli Style Recipes  6 comments

Puttu is basically peeled and mashed vegetable that is tempered with spices, green chillies and onion. This Potato Puttu is a simple yet flavourful side dish for rice. This goes well with sambar, rasam & most of all with any spicy kuzhambu. Usually I make some kootu variety to pair with it, but this Potato Puttu is also a favourite at home. When we get bored with the usual potato fry with all the masalas, I make this much milder version.

Mor Kuzhambu with Vadai – Mor Kuzhambu

February 16, 2017 Kuzhambu VarietiesTirunelveli Style Recipes  7 comments

Mor Kuzhambu or Butter Milk Kuzhambu is an easy and quick kuzhambu that most of u might know. Just sharing here, my version of it. Vegetables that can be added include okra, chow chow or poosanikai. Paruppu Vadai with Mor kuzhambu is a special and perfect combination. This goes well with steamed rice and paruppu usili or potato fry or seppankizhangu fry. I make it with vadai when time permits, else with veggies. Both tastes good. If nothing is available, I make it as a plain kuzhambu and temper it with vadagam too.

Chow Chow Kootu – Chayote Kootu

February 6, 2017 Chow ChowKootu / Poriyal VarietiesTirunelveli Style Recipes  5 comments

Kootu is a South Indian side dish for rice made with veggies, lentils and coconut. Chow Chow Kootu is a simple kootu variety that goes well with rice. Our family favourite combo is with rice & Poondu Kulambu, though we like to have with sambar as well. It tastes good with chapathi or mixed with plain rice too. I normally prefer adding a handful of moong dal or chana dal while making the kootu. Do check my Podalangai Poricha Kootu which is quite a spicy version of kootu.

Black Urad Dal Dosa – Karuppu Ulundu Dosai

February 21, 2016 Breakfast/DinnerDosa CornerTirunelveli Style Recipes  14 comments

Karuppu Ulundu Dosai is an added healthy twist to the normal dosa. It is made with black urad dal i.e urad dal with skin. I normally prefer to make Ulutham Paruupu Satham with this karuppu ulundu, but it is quite difficult to trick Chotu because of the colour. So I make this Karuppu Ulundu Dosai to sneak-peak black urad dal. It tastes almost the same as normal dosa. The only difference is again the colour, but it is manageable with him

Murungai Keerai or Drumstick Leaves is very well known for its health benefits. It is rich in iron, calcium and very good for lactating mothers. There is a drumstick tree in my mom’s place. Its so easy to enjoy the benefits of drumstick leaves quite often. But here for me, I rarely get it. Was really excited to buy it from our Indian shop last week. It was so fresh and green 🙂

Puli Milagai – Puli Milagai Pachadi

November 12, 2015 CondimentsKuzhambu VarietiesSide Dish for Idli/DosaTamil New Year RecipesTirunelveli Style Recipes  7 comments

After all the festive food, we really wanted a simple and spicy meal. This Puli Milagai is one dish which is spicy, tangy and mildly sweet. It is easy to make and goes well with dal rice/paruppu sadham and even idli/dosa. We usually prefer the consistency to be a bit runny, U can make it thicker too. I served with rice, paruppu and Vazhakkai Puttu.
