Coconut Chutney is a popular and favourite chutney variety in any South Indian household. This Coconut Mint Chutney is a variation to the normal Coconut Chutney with the additional bursting flavours of mint and ginger. This is mostly found as one of the accompaniments for idli/dosa in any restaurant menu along with sambar, kara chutney, coconut chutney. Among all the other chutneys, this Coconut Mint Chutney is my personal favourite!!

Now to the recipe…

[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time- 5 mins]

  • Coconut (grated) – 1/2 cup
  • Mint leaves – handful
  • Ginger – 1 inch pc
  • Green Chillies – 2 to 3
  • Tamarind paste – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – as needed

To temper:

  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Mustard – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – 1 tsp

  • Wash and clean the mint leaves. Heat a pan, add a few drops of oil and saute the mint leaves, slit green chillies. It will shrink. Let it cool. Take grated coconut, mint leaves, green chillies, salt, ginger and tamarind paste in a mixer.

  • Grind it into a semi-coarse paste. Keep it aside. Heat a pan with 1 tsp of oil and temper with mustard and urad dal. Transfer the tempering to the Coconut Mint Chutney.

That’s it!! Coconut Mint Chutney is ready!!

Serve with idli or dosa.

  1. Ginger and mint go well with each other. U can add ginger or skip it as per your choice.
  2. No need to saute the mint leaves for a long time. Just until it shrinks.
  3. Adjust green chillies according to your spice levels.
  4. Add as much or less of mint leaves as per your choice. The color of the Coconut Mint Chutney depends upon the amount of mint leaves u use.
