Dal Khichdi is a simple one pot meal that can be made in a jiffy. It is a combination of rice and green moong dal along with spices in onion tomato gravy. This is yet another easy to make recipe for working women and bachelors. Do try my Moong Dal Khichdi recipe too.

Dal Khichdi My Magic Pan

Dal Khichdi Ingredients:

  • Basmati Rice – 1 cup
  • Green Moong Dal – 1/2 cup
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Ghee – 1 tbsp
  • Jeera / Cumin Seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Onion – 1
  • Tomato – 2 small
  • Potato – 1 (optional)
  • Ginger/Garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Garam masala – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – as needed
  • Chilli powder – 1 tsp

Method:

  • Take a pressure pan and heat it with oil. Saute cubed potaoes until they are slightly brown. Keep this aside. In the same oil add ghee and temper with cumin seeds. Add chopped onions and saute until they are transparent. Next add ginger garlic paste and saute for a min.

  • Now add chopped tomatoes followed by salt and chilli powder. Saute them until tomatoes are mushy and oil oozes out. Add garam masala and mix. Meanwhile wash rice and green moong dal and add this to the onion tomato gravy.

  • Add 3 cups of water to this and check for salt. Add the cubed (fried) potatoes along with the rice. Pressure cook for a whistle and simmer it for 10 mins. Once the pressure releases mix well and serve hot.

Easy Dal Khichdi is ready. Serve it hot topped with a dollop of ghee along with raita, pickle or papad.

Tips:

  1. U can add vegetables too. I prefer my dal khichdi either plain without vegetables or as above with potatoes alone.
  2. U can omit garam masala and whole garam masala spices while tempering too.
  3. U can add slit green chillies and adjust chilli powder accordingly.
