Dal Makhani is a popular recipe that u can find in any restaurant’s menu card. It is made with whole black lentils(urad dal) and kidney beans(rajma). Its rich and creamy texture along with aromatic spices is a perfect side dish for rice, roti or naan. Try my simple Dal Fry recipe too.
Now to the recipe…
Dal Makhani Ingredients:
- Whole black dal(Urad dal) – 1 cup
- Kidney beans/Rajma – 1/4 cup
- Onion – 2 small
- Tomato – 2 small
- Green Chilli – 1 (chopped)
- Ginger – 1 inch (chopped)
- Chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Coriander powder – 1 tbsp
- Garam Masala – 1/2 tsp
- Salt – as needed
- Butter – 2 tbsp
- Cream – 2 tbsp
- Coriander leaves – for garnishing
Method:
- Soak the lentils and kidney beans overnight. Pressure cook along with ginger strips for 5-6 whistles. Its ok even if its overcooked as we need to mash it anyway.
- Heat a pan with butter, add the chopped onions, green chilli and saute till the onions are transparent. Add chopped tomatoes followed by salt, chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Cook in medium flame until tomatoes are mushy and oil oozes out.
- Add the mashed dal, required water and mix. Boil for a few mins until all the ingredients blend well. Finally add cream and cook for another minute. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.
Creamy & yummy Dal Makhani is ready to serve. Enjoy it hot with roti or rice.
Tips:
- Soaking the lentils is a must – atleast for 5-7 hrs.
- Do not skip to add ginger while cooking the lentils. It has a unique flavour.
- U can use oil instead of butter & skip cream if u do not want to add more calories.
