Tomato Gotsu – Thakkali Gotsu

Tomato Gotsu or Thakkali Gotsu is an excellent side dish for idli/dosa. It is a very easy and quick fix sambar kind of side dish. When u run out of time, this can be made very quickly without much preparation work. Chotu is a big fan of hot, crispy dosa and sambar. I mostly make this tiffin sambar or this tiffin sambar. This Tomato Gotsu is a nice variation to it. Chotu calls this tomato sambar.

This pairs equally well with Ven Pongal too..

Now to the recipe…

Method:

  • Heat a pan with water and add the tomatoes & slit green chillies. (Make a criss-cross on the tomatoes with a knife). The tomatoes will get cooked very quickly. U can see the skin peeling out. Switch off, let it cool. Once cooled discard the skin and mash with a fork or potato masher. Keep this aside.

  • Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, curry leaves and asafoetida. To this add finely chopped onions and saute until transparent. Now add the mashed tomato puree, salt and let it boil.

  • Add cooked and mashed toor dal and a ladle of idli/dosa batter. Mix well and let it boil for a few minutes. U can see that the Tomato Gotsu will start thickening. Finally add fresh coriander leaves and switch off the flame.

Tips:

  1. This Tomato Gotsu will be quite watery only. So do not expect to be as thick as the normal sambar.
  2. Asafoetida and coriander leaves are the stars of this recipe, so do not skip it.
  3. I have not used any chilli powder in this. The spiciness from green chillies is enough. U can reduce the amount of green chillies and add chilli powder too.
  4. Adding cooked toor dal is optional. Amma usually adds only idli/dosa batter as a thickening agent. It does give a unique taste.
  5. U can add a tbsp of rice flour mixed in some water to thicken the Tomato Gotsu too instead of adding idli/dosa batter.
