Mozzarella Sticks – Homemade Cheese Sticks

Cheese is a favourite among kids and even adults. Chotu just loves the Mozzarella Sticks that we get in Domino’s. It is one of our family favourites, among the limited vegetarian options that we are left with.. I have always wanted to try to make these cheese sticks at home, but was a little skeptical to try as I felt the cheese would ooze out and would turn into a disaster. I saw this recipe in a cook book and was really convinced to try at home, since it was mentioned to freeze the mozzarella sticks before frying. It did come out well and was a super hit at home.
It is easy to make and much better than the restaurant ones. If u try it once at home, I bet you would never buy it from outside. See all the tips and tricks to get the perfect Mozzarella sticks.
Now to the recipe…
[Preparation Time – 15 mins : Freezing time: Min 1 hour : Cooking Time – 15 mins]
Ingredients:
For the batter:
- Mozarella Cheese – 250 gms cut into 8 to 10 sticks
- Maida – 1/2 cup
- Corn Flour – 1/3 cup
- Salt – a pinch
- Oregano – 1 tsp
- Crushed Pepper – 1 tsp
For the crust:
- Bread Crumbs – 1 1/2 cups
- Garlic powder – 1/4 tsp (optional)
- Salt – a pinch
- Crushed Pepper – 1 tsp
- Oregano – 1 tsp
Oil – to fry
Method:
- Take the mozzarella cube and cut into sticks. In a wide bowl, take all the ingredients mentioned for the batter.
- Add water little by little to make a thick batter. Take a plate and add all the ingredients mentioned for the crust. Mix and keep it ready.
- Take a cheese stick, dip it in the batter. Make sure the batter is coated well on all sides. Now coat them evenly with the bread crumb mixture.
- Now again dip the cheese stick in the batter and coat it with the bread crumbs. Press the bread crumbs firmly. Freeze the cheese sticks for 1 hour.
- Heat a pan with oil and fry the mozzarella sticks 2 to 3 at a time. Carefully flip in between and fry till golden brown. Make sure oil is really hot. Drain it in paper towels.
Crispy, cheesy Mozzarella Sticks are ready.
Serve hot with any sauce of your choice.
Tips:
- Freezing the Mozzarella Sticks is very important, the longer the better. Else the cheese will ooze out and spoil the whole idea.
- Make sure the oil is really hot when frying. If u fry it for a longer time, the cheese will ooze out. Once they turn golden brown, take it off the oil. The outer crust will not take a longer time to fry.
- Double coating is the key to make perfect Mozzarella Sticks. This way there are very less chances of the cheese oozing out.
- U can add any spices to the batter as well as the outer crust mixture like dry basil, italian seasoning, chilli flakes. Adding garlic powder is optional but it takes the Mozzarella Sticks to the next level.
- Do not over crowd the oil with too many cheese sticks. Try with 1 or 2 first and continue with the next batch.
- I would recommend to use as less as possible oil to fry. In my opinion the same oil cannot be used for any other purpose.

Hey these look superb! Can we coat and freeze them for future use? How long can they be stored frozen? And how are they to be frozen…in airtight container all together or individually in cling film and then in container?
Thank u Swati 🙂 Honestly I havent tried storing them, in my opinion it should stay good for a couple of days! I just put the coated cheese sticks in a tray, covered with cling film and put it in the freezer. Hope this helps!!
