Mini Masala Idli – Masala Idli

September 16, 2014 Kids BayLunch Box Menu  6 comments

Making kids eat is the most difficult task for every mum. Especially packing lunch to school is a nightmare. The food should be nutritious, tasty and make the kids happy. Ooff!! It is indeed a tough job for mums. This Mini Masala Idli was an attempt to make Chotu eat idlis and yes I succeeded 🙂 Am very happy to have made him eat idli along with a good dose of veggies…

Now to the recipe…

Ingredients:

  • Mini Idlis – 15 to 20
  • Ghee – 1 tbsp
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Idli/Dosa Milagai Podi – 1 tbsp
  • Onion – 1
  • Capsicum – 1/2
  • Carrot – 1
  • Mustard – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Salt – as needed

Method:

  • Chop onion finely, capsicum into thin strips and grate the carrot. Keep the veggies ready. Heat a pan with ghee and add the mini idlis. Saute them so that it gets coated well with ghee and becomes slighlty brown. Keep it aside. In the same pan add oil and temper with mustard seeds and curry leaves.

  • Add finely chopped onions and saute until transparent. To this add capsicum and carrot and required salt (remember the idlis will have salt in them). Saute for a min or two. Let it be a little crunchy.

  • Add the fried idlis and saute. Finally add idli/dosa milagai podi and saute so that all the ingredients blend well.

Tips:

  1. If you dont have mini idli mould, make normal idlis and cut them into 4 pieces each and make the above recipe..
  2. Since this recipe is especially for kids, I have not added any green chillies. U can add 1 or 2 green chillies along with onion and saute. Adjust Idli/dosa Milagai podi accordingly.
  3. U can use pepper powder instead of idli/dosa milagai podi.

Sending this recipe to the Kids Lunch Box Recipes event conducted by Indus Ladies.

Nice idea and looks tempting too. I used to do it by cutting the normal idlies into small pieces with different masala. Will try your way next. Thanks for sharing.
