Chow Chow Fry – Chayote Fry
-
Chayote, known as chow chow in tamil is usually made as a kootu in any South Indian household. I make this Chow Chow Fry quite often than kootu. This fry goes well with roti and rice. So whenever I make this, Chotu has it with rice and we have it as a roti wrap for lunch. Two in one purpose solved right?!? This veggie takes very less time to cook and is a super easy recipe.
Do try my Chow Chow Chutney too!!
Now to the recipe..
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time-20 mins]
Ingredients:
- Chow Chow – 2 (Medium sized)
- Oil – 2 tbsp
- Jeera/Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Salt – as needed
- Chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp
- Almonds – few
- Roasted gram dal – handful
Method:
- Wash and peel the skin of chow chow. Discard the seed and chop it into pieces. Heat a pan with oil and temper with jeera. Add the chopped chow chow followed by salt, chilli powder and turmeric powder.
- Mix well and let it cook in medium flame. The veggie will ooze out some water as shown in the 2nd picture. Continue to cook in medium flame until it is soft and all the water is evaporated. Meanwhile take the almonds and roasted gram dal in a mixer.
- Grind it into a semi-coarse powder. Add the powder to the cooked chow chow and mix. Roast it in medium flame for a few mins. Switch off the flame.
Thats it!! Chow Chow Fry is ready!!
Serve hot with roti or rice.
Tips:
- Chow Chow has a lot of water content naturally. No need to add any water to cook it.
- Also it will get cooked very quickly. So make sure not to make it mushy.
- U can add besan flour instead of almond/roasted gram dal powder too.
- Add the ground powder after all the water is evaporated, else the Chow Chow Fry will be very sticky.
