Vazhakkai Putti or Vazhakkai Podimas how ever u call it is a simple and easy stir fry. I usually make a varuval or poriyal with raw banana, for a change I made this Vazhakkai Puttu. We loved this too. This puttu is the most common way to make raw banana. It pairs very well with rice, rasam or sambar.
Now to the recipe…
[Preparation Time – 10 mins : Cooking Time – 20 mins]
Ingredients:
- Raw Banana – 4 (small)
- Onion – 1
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – a sprig
- Salt – as needed
- Turmeric Powder – a pinch
To grind into a paste
- Grated Coconut – 3 tbsp
- Coriander seeds – 1 tsp
- Pepper – 1/2 tsp
- Jeera/Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Red Chillies – 2
- Garlic – 4 cloves
Method:
- Take raw banana and trim the edges. Heat a pan with water and cook the raw banana for 10 mins. Once it is cooked remove the skin and grate it using a grater.
- Meanwhile take all the ingredients mentioned under “to grind” in a mixer and grind it into a coarse paste. Keep this aside. Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard and curry leaves. Add chopped onion and saute until it becomes transparent.
- To this add grated raw banana and saute. Add salt, turmeric powder and the ground paste. Mix well and saute until the raw smell of the ground paste goes off and the curry is dry. Switch off the flame.
Easy and flavourful Vazhakkai Puttu is ready.
Enjoy with steamed rice and rasam/sambar.
Tips:
- U can skip onion and garlic for a No Onion No Garlic version.
- Instead of cooking the raw banana and grating it, U can alternatively chop the raw banana and cook it directly too.
- After grating the raw banana make the vazhakkai puttu immediately, else it will turn black.
- Adjust spice levels according to your preferences.
