January 22, 2019 Breakfast/Dinner, Dosa Corner

A very late Happy New Year to all of u. Its been a long time since I disappeared from here. Sorry about that. Hope u all had a good start to the new year. This recipe is about Red Rice Adai. A healthy mix of red rice and lentils. It is a very simple recipe to make. All u need to plan is the soaking time. No fermentation required. Can be used immediately. Adai is a favourite at home. I usually make another dosa/adai variety (batter) handy to cope the busy weekdays along with the Idli/Dosa batter. It also adds a variety to the normal boring dosa!
Now to the recipe..
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time- 5 mins : Soaking Time – 2 hours]
Red Rice Adai Ingredients:
- Red Rice – 2 cups
- Chana Dal – 1/2 cup
- Toor Dal – 1/4 cup
- Kollu/Horsegram – 1/4 cup
- Moong Beans – 1/4 cup
- Godhuma Rava/Wheat Rava – 1/4 cup
- Red chillies – 5
- Onion – 2 (finely chopped)
- Oil – to drizzle
- Salt – as needed
- Asafoetida – a generous pinch
Method:
- Take red rice in a separate bowl and the lentils in a different bowl. Wash and soak red rice along with 5 red chillies.
- Wash and soak the lentils separately in a bowl. In a mixer or grinder, add the soaked red rice and start grinding. Let it grind coarsely. Now add the soaked lentils along with the coarsely ground red rice.
- Grind it coarsely with little water. It should not be very smooth. Add required salt and switch off the grinder. Now the batter is ready. Add a generous pinch of asafoetida and finely chopped onions. (Missed to take a pic before mixing the batter) Add little water if needed to adjust the consistency of the batter.
- Heat a tava and pour the batter and spread in circular motion. Drizzle some oil. Flip & cook on both sides until golden brown. This will take a bit more time to cook when compared to the normal dosa.
Thats it! Healthy Red Rice Adai ready.
Serve hot with milagai podi or any chutney of your choice.
Tips:
- Adai will take a longer time to cook when compared to dosa. So be patient.
- Adjust red chillies according to your spice levels. U can add red chilli powder too.
- U can add finely chopped carrot, beans along with onions to make even more healthier.
- The batter stores well in the refrigerator for 2-3 days without adding the onions. Add onions just while making the adai for the required amount of batter only.
