Adai is a South Indian crepe made with rice & mixed lentils. Vazhaipoo Adai is an added healthier version. Vazhaipoo has loads of health benefits. This Vazhaipoo Adai is made by adding chopped vazhaipoo to the batter. It will be crispy. We have started including vazhaipoo in our diet regularly, atleast once in a month. Chotu really likes it. Though the cleaning process is a time consuming one, it is worth the effort. Click HERE to see how to clean Vazhaipoo.

Here is the recipe…

  • Toor Dal – 1/4 cup
  • Red Chillies – 4 to 5

Method:

  • Soak rice(along with red chillies) and dals separately for a minimum of 2-3 hours.

  • In a grinder/mixer grind the soaked rice and red chillies first. When they are half done (very coarse texture) add the soaked dal along with the rice and grind to a coarse batter. Refer pic for texture. Add salt and asafoetida at the end so that it gets mixed evenly. Meanwhile chop the cleaned Vazhaipoo finely.

  • Add curry leaves and the chopped vazhaipoo to the batter. Mix well .

  • Heat a tawa. Drizzle some oil and spread a laddle full of batter like we do for dosa. Drizzle a little oil. Once it is cooked on one side flip the adai and cook the other side until golden brown.

Thats it! Healthy & yummy Vazhaipoo Adai is ready!

Serve hot with podi or chutney. I served with Idli Podi and Jaggery syrup. 🙂

Tips:

  1. U can add chopped sambar onions too along with vazhaipoo. We just wanted the Vazhaipoo flavour.
  2. Adai will take a longer time to cook when compared to dosa. So be patient.
  3. The red chillies I get here are very spicy, so have added only 4-5 nos. U can increase it according to your requirements.
