I always love to include oats in my menu. This Oats Sambar Sadam is a healthy, nutritious recipe with oats that can be had for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Loaded with veggies this Sambar Oats is a light, yet filling one. I have already posted a Sambar Sadam recipe with rice. This is a healthy twist to it. So this Sambar Oats is for all those sambar and oats lovers!!
Now to the recipe..
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time- 30 mins]
Ingredients:
- Oats – 1 cup
- Toor Dal – 1/4 cup (cooked)
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Mustard – 1/2 tsp
- Jeera/Cumin – 1/2 tsp
- Onion – 1
- Tomato – 1
- Carrot – 2
- Peas – handful
- Sambar Powder – 2 tsp
- Salt – as needed
- Curry leaves – a sprig
- Coriander leaves – few
Method:
- Heat oil in a pan and temper with mustard and jeera. Add finely chopped onion, curry leaves and saute until onion turns transparent. Then add chopped carrots and peas. Saute until soft. Add chopped tomato, salt and sambar powder. Saute until tomatoes are mushy.
- Add 3 cups of water and the cooked toor dal. When it comes to a boil add the oats. Cook in low-medium flame for 5-6 mins until oats get cooked well. It has to be in semi-solid porridge consistency. Switch off the flame. Garnish with coriander leaves.
Thats it!! Sambar Oats is ready!!
Serve hot!!
Tips:
- U can add any veggies of your choice.
- This Sambar Oats has to be in a semi-solid stage, else it will be too sticky.
- Consume it piping hot for best taste.

How can there be Sambar without tamarind or something sour? Ask a seasoned tambram I can’t imagine sambar without tamarind.
I have used tomato instead of tamarind. Pls see the recipe clearly..
