Chotu is a big big fan of the Garlic Bread that we get in Dominos (India). Whenever we are on a vacation, he would love to have it as a main course rather than as a side. I have been wanting to try to make this at home since a very long time as the Garlic Bread that we get here (UK) is totally different from the one that we get there! After a lot of googling, tried the recipe which I adapted from cooking shooking show. I was a bit sceptical to use the MONSTER called yeast, but trust me it is not as bad as I thought.
It really helps to get a soft & fluffy textured Garlic Bread similar to the ones that we get in restaurants. I managed to make a video too. Am super-duper happy as I passed Chotu’s inspection with distinction!! hehehehee.. Do try my Pizza recipe too..
Here is the video..
Now to the recipe…[Preparation Time-30 mins : Resting Time – 2 hours : Baking Time-20 to 25 mins]
Garlic Bread Ingredients:
- Plain flour / All purpose flour – 1 & 1/4 cup + for dusting
- Active dry yeast – 1 tsp
- Warm water – 1/2 cup
- Sugar – 1 tsp
- Garlic – 4 to 5 cloves (finely chopped)
- Garlic powder – 1 tsp
- Chilli flakes – 1 tsp
- Salt – 1 tsp
- Mixed herbs – 1 tsp
- Olive oil – 1 tbsp
- Melted butter – as needed (to brush)
- Cheese – as needed (grated)
For the Seasoning:
- Salt – 1/2 tsp
- Oregano – 1 tsp
- Chilli flakes – 1 tsp
- Garlic powder – 1 tsp
Method:
- Take a wide bowl and add luke warm water, sugar & active dry yeast. Mix well & keep it in a warm place for 10 mins. After 10 mins, the water will look cloudy & frothy. This ensures that the yeast has activated.
- Now add flour, salt, chopped garlic, garlic powder, chilli flakes, mixed herbs & olive oil. Mix well and knead it into a smooth dough. Make sure u knead the dough atleast for 10 to 15 mins. Oil the bowl with olive oil and keep the dough covered for 2 hours.
- U can see that the dough has doubled in size after 2 hours. Punch the dough and transfer it to a dusted floor. It will look sticky at this stage. Meanwhile keep the seasoning ready by grinding the ingredients mentioned under “for the seasoning” in a mixer.
- Knead the dough well so that it is smooth. I divided it into 2 equal portions. Use a roller pin to flatten it. Brush the inner side with melted butter and add grated cheese on one half of the flattened dough (as shown in the picure). Sprinkle some seasoning over the cheese.
- Fold it and seal the edges by pressing it. Transfer the Garlic Bread to a lined tray. Brush the top with some melted butter and sprinkle some seasoning and oregano. Make slits with a knife so that it is easy to make pieces once it is baked. Bake it in a pre-heated oven @ 200 degrees celsius for 20 to 25 mins. U can see the beautiful golden brown colour.
Thats it!! Dominos Style Garlic Bread is ready!!
Serve hot and enjoy!!
Tips:
- I have used active dry yeast, hence had to activate the yeast. If u are using instant yeast, u can skip this step and add the yeast along with the other ingredients to the flour and knead the dough.
- Make sure to use luke warm water. If the water is hot or cold, the yeast will not get activated.
- Add the ingredients to the yeast mixture after it is activated, else the whole process will not work.
- U can leave the dough for 2 hours and check if it has doubled in size. The time depends upon the yeast u use and the climatic conditions of the place in which u are located. I would suggest to rest the dough in a warm place.
- U can skip the garlic powder if not available.
- Make the seasoning as per your choice. Other options would be to add pepper, red chilli powder, mixed herbs.
- I have stuffed the Garlic Bread with cheese. U can use olives, sweet corn or other toppings as per your choice. U can bake it without stuffing too.
- U can use olive oil instead of melted butter to brush the top.
