Sodhi is a very rich coconut milk based recipe which is native to our place (Tirunelveli). This is a must in our marriages. It is usully made on the next day of the wedding known as Maru Veedu. Our weddings are like a 3 day festival and the highlight is this Sodhi Sapadu. This is served with Inji Thuvaiyal (recipe coming next), potato fry & potato chips. Totally divine. A tip for eating this which many are not aware – It is meant to be eaten like Rasam Rice and not like Sambar Rice. Meaning you must pour more sodhi generously than the amount of rice. Eating this on a banana leaf is a trick yet heavenly. Goes well with dosa as well.

Here is the video..

Method:

MOST IMPORTANT STEP IS EXTRACTING COCONUT MILK. GRATE COCONUT AND EXTRACT 1ST COCONUT MILK. KEEP IT ASIDE. LIKEWISE EXTRACT 2ND & 3RD MILK. KEEP IT READY.

  • Take moong dal in a pressure cooker. Wash it, add water & cook for 2 whistles. Mash it and keep it aside.

  • Heat a pan with oil and add sliced ginger & onions. Saute until onions turn translucent.

  • Add the chopped potato, beans & carrots to it and saute for a few mins. Take 2nd & 3rd coconut milk in a wide vessel and add the veggies to it.

  • Let it boil for a while in medium flame. Meanwhile take the green chillies in a mixer.

  • Grind it finely. Add water for ease of grinding. The veggies would have cooked soft.

  • Add the ground chilli & cooked moong dal to it.

  • Boil for a couple of mins to get rid of the raw smell. Now add required salt and mix well.

Tips:

  1. Use 1/2 coconut per person. I have used 2 coconuts as 1 & 1/2 + 1/2 coconut extra for my family of 3. Calculate accordingly.
  2. Extract coconut milk with warm water.
  3. Do not add salt in the beginning. Follow as per mentioned above.
  4. SWITCH OFF THE FLAME BEFORE ADDING 1ST COCONUT MILK & LEMON JUICE. If u boil, it will curdle and not taste/look good.
  5. Adjust green chillies according to the spice level of chillies.
