Sodhi is a very rich coconut milk based recipe which is native to our place (Tirunelveli). This is a must in our marriages. It is usully made on the next day of the wedding known as Maru Veedu. Our weddings are like a 3 day festival and the highlight is this Sodhi Sapadu. This is served with Inji Thuvaiyal (recipe coming next), potato fry & potato chips. Totally divine. A tip for eating this which many are not aware – It is meant to be eaten like Rasam Rice and not like Sambar Rice. Meaning you must pour more sodhi generously than the amount of rice. Eating this on a banana leaf is a trick yet heavenly. Goes well with dosa as well.

Now to the recipe…[Preparation Time-15 mins : Cooking Time-30 mins]
Sodhi Ingredients:
- Coconut – 2 (See tips)
- Moong dal – 1/3 cup
- Potato – 3
- Carrot – 4
- Beans – 15
- Onion – 2
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Ginger – 2 inch pc(sliced)
- Green chilli – 6
- Lemon – 1
- Salt – as needed
Method:
MOST IMPORTANT STEP IS EXTRACTING COCONUT MILK. GRATE COCONUT AND EXTRACT 1ST COCONUT MILK. KEEP IT ASIDE. LIKEWISE EXTRACT 2ND & 3RD MILK. KEEP IT READY.
- Take moong dal in a pressure cooker. Wash it, add water & cook for 2 whistles. Mash it and keep it aside.
- Heat a pan with oil and add sliced ginger & onions. Saute until onions turn translucent.
- Add the chopped potato, beans & carrots to it and saute for a few mins. Take 2nd & 3rd coconut milk in a wide vessel and add the veggies to it.
- Let it boil for a while in medium flame. Meanwhile take the green chillies in a mixer.
- Grind it finely. Add water for ease of grinding. The veggies would have cooked soft.
- Add the ground chilli & cooked moong dal to it.
- Boil for a couple of mins to get rid of the raw smell. Now add required salt and mix well.
- SWITCH OFF THE FLAME AND ADD THE 1ST COCONUT MILK. Mix and add lemon juice. Mix well and serve.
Thats it! Tirunelveli Sodhi ready!
Serve with potato fry & chips.
Tips:
- Use 1/2 coconut per person. I have used 2 coconuts as 1 & 1/2 + 1/2 coconut extra for my family of 3. Calculate accordingly.
- Extract coconut milk with warm water.
- Do not add salt in the beginning. Follow as per mentioned above.
- SWITCH OFF THE FLAME BEFORE ADDING 1ST COCONUT MILK & LEMON JUICE. If u boil, it will curdle and not taste/look good.
- Adjust green chillies according to the spice level of chillies.
