Panagam – Panakam – Rama Navami Recipes

Drinks, Summer Special

Panagam or Panakam is a traditional drink made especially on Rama Navami. It is a Hindu festival celebrating the birth of Lord Rama. As Rama Navami falls on the 5th of April, thought of posting this traditional recipe. This is a child hood favourite. My grandma used to make this for her daily pooja as a prasad, especially during summer time. It is a perfect thirst quencher too. The addition of cardamom and ginger powder gives a divine taste to it.
Now to the recipe…
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time- NIL ]
Panagam Ingredients:
- Jaggery – 1/4 cup (crushed)
- Lemon – 1/2 or 1 small
- Water – 2 cups
- Cardamom powder – a generous pinch
- Dry ginger powder – a pinch
Method:
- Crush jaggery and soak it in water. To this add water and lemon juice. Mix well so that the jaggery gets dissolved well.
- To this add cardamom powder and dry ginger powder. Mix well and strain it with the help of a strainer to remove the impurities of jaggery.
Thats it!! Refreshing and healthy Panagam is ready!
Refrigerate for a while if u wish and serve chilled!!
Tips:
- Adjust jaggery according the sourness of the lemon juice.
- The colour of Panagam depends upon the jaggery u use.
- U can refrigerate it or use cold water to make it.
- U can add a few basil (tulasi) leaves too.
