Dal is a side dish that I make almost everyday at home. Be it for rice or roti, Dal is a must for us!! This Dal Palak is an easy day-to-day recipe that can be made very quickly. I make variations in the tempering and use different varieties of dal. This Dal Palak has an extra nutritional value due to the addition of palak/spinach. Now to the recipe..
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time- 25 mins]
Dal Palak Ingredients:
- Toor Dal – 1/2 cup
- Masoor Dal – 1/2 cup
- Palak – 1 cup (tightly packed)
- Onion – 2
- Tomatoes – 1
- Salt – as needed
- Chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Turmeric Powder – a pinch
- Oil – 1 tbsp
- Jeera/Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Asafoetida – a pinch
Method:
- Take both the dals in a pressure pan. Wash it and add washed/roughly chopped palak to it. Add water upto immersing level. Add turmeric powder and asafoetida to it. Pressure cook it for 1 whistle and simmer for 10 mins.
- Once the pressure releases mash it well. Heat a pan with oil and temper with jeera. Add finely chopped onions and saute until transparent. Add chopped tomatoes, salt, chilli powder and turmeric powder.
- Mix well and cook until tomatoes become mushy and oil oozes out. Add this to the cooked dal. Add water according to the consistency of the dal needed. Mix well and boil for a couple of mins. Switch off the flame.
Thats it!! Dal Palak is ready!!
Serve hot with rice or roti!!
Tips:
- I have used toor dal and masoor dal. U can make this Dal Palak with just toor dal too.
- Since palak is used, I do not prefer to add curry leaves/coriander leaves.
- This Dal Palak can be served as a soup too.
