August 12, 2015 Kuzhambu VarietiesSide Dish for Idli/DosaTirunelveli Style RecipesTomato  11 comments

Tomato Gotsu or Thakkali Gotsu is an excellent side dish for idli/dosa. It is a very easy and quick fix sambar kind of side dish. When u run out of time, this can be made very quickly without much preparation work. Chotu is a big fan of hot, crispy dosa and sambar. I mostly make this tiffin sambar or this tiffin sambar. This Tomato Gotsu is a nice variation to it. Chotu calls this tomato sambar.

This pairs equally well with Ven Pongal too..

Ulutham Paruppu Sadham – Urad Dal Rice

November 10, 2014 Rice VarietiesTirunelveli Style Recipes  7 comments

Uluthum Paruppu Sadham/Urad Dal rice is an easy and healthy one pot meal. It is a traditional lunch menu of Tirunelveli. This is served specially to teenage girls during puberty. Urad Dal is rich in calcium and helps to strengthen bones. The complete combo would be Ulutham Paruppu Sadham, ellu thuvayal (recipe coming next), Aviyal and/or vathal. This can be made with split white urad dal or the black ones with skin. I have used white urad dal as Chotu does not like the look of the black ones and says “NO” immediately. Black Urad Dal is much healthier than this.

Ellu Milagai Podi or Sesame seeds gun powder is a great accompaniment with idli/dosa. I have already posted a Dosa Milagai Podi recipe earlier. This ellu milagai podi is a slight variation, with a nutty flavour and goodness of sesame seeds. Dosa Milagai Podi is Chotu’s favourite and as far as I have seen kids love it for idli/dosa. This Ellu Milagai Podi is a great method to sneak in some sesame seeds.

Red Coconut Chutney is a coconut chutney made with dry red chillies. In our family, this is the default chutney that we make when we travel. We call this “Ooruku Pora Chutney”. Funny isn’t it? This stays good for a day or two if handled properly. Spicy red coconut chutney along with pillow soft idlis is a divine combo. Try making this simple yet delicious chutney.

Paal Kova / Sweet Milk Kova / PalKova

October 24, 2013 Diwali SweetsGokulashtami RecipesSweets/DessertsTirunelveli Style Recipes  3 comments

Paal Kova is a popular and traditional South Indian sweet. The best place to get the authentic Paal Kova is from Alwarthirunagari. The process of making is simple, but it is a time consuming recipe. The taste is worth spending so much time.. I would suggest to use a heavy bottom pan, so that the milk does not get burnt at the bottom. U can leave the milk in simmer, stirring it in intervals. When I make Paal Kova, I plan it such a way that am in the kitchen (cooking something else too) so that u need to spend your time only making this. U can try this 10 Min Palkova if u cannot spend much time.
