Mullu Murukku is a crispy and crunchy snack that we can make for Diwali. There are many versions of making this murukku. This is with rice flour and urad dal flour. Chotu prefers these snacks rather than the store bought junk foods. Though these are addictive i would’nt mind as they are home made. 🙂 Am sure your kids would love these too.. Try this Garlic Murukku for a variation.
Now to the recipe…
Mullu Murukku Ingredients:
- Rice Flour – 1 cup
- Urad Dal Flour – 1/2 cup
- Butter – 1 tbsp
- Cumin Seeds – 1 tbsp
- Asafoetida – a generous pinch
- Oil – to deep fry
- Salt – as needed
- Water – as needed
Method:
- Take both the flours and sieve it 2-3 times. There should not be any granules. Add butter, jeera and mix well so that the butter is uniformly spread.
- Mix required salt and asafoetida in water and add this to the flour and make a soft dough. Take a handful of dough in a murukku presser. Use the single star press.
- Heat oil in a pan. Make round shaped murukku in a ladle and transfer this to hot oil. When the sizzling sound starts subsiding, take it off and drain in a kitchen towel. Store them in an airtight container.Repeat the process for the rest of the dough.
Enjoy crispy murukku for Diwali or as a snack for tea time.
Tips
- I used store bought rice flour and home made Urad dal flour, If u don’t have ready to use urad dal flour, u can either grind it in your mixer in batches or from a flour mill(which is much easier) .
- U can substitute urad dal flour with Gram Dal flour (Pottu kadalai flour) .
- Amma always advices to dissolve salt and asafoetida in water and then make a dough. This is to ensure that it does not burst while deep frying.
- Ensure oil is hot when u deep fry.
- U can use the 3 stars shaped achu and press it like thenguzhal.
- You can use chilli powder for a spicy version.
