Kollu Sundal – Horsegram Sundal
September 29, 2016 Navaratri Special
-
Navaratri is around the corner. This Kollu Sundal is a flavourful and easy sundal to make during Navaratri. The only planning needed to make this sundal is to soak kollu/horsegram overnight. After making the Kollu Rasam, for which I used only a little portion of the cooked kollu, I made this Kollu Sundal. It was so flavourful and filling.

Now to the recipe…
[Preparation Time-10 mins : Soaking Time – overnight : Cooking Time- 10 mins]
Ingredients:
- Kollu/Horsegram – 1 cup
- Grated coconut – 2 tbsp
- Oil – 1 tsp
- Mustard – 1/2 tsp
- Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
- Curry leaves – few
- Asafoetida – a pinch
- Salt – as needed
To dry roast & grind:
- Red chilli – 2
- Urad dal – 1 tsp
- Chana dal – 1 tsp
- Coriander seeds – 1.5 tsp
Method:
- Wash and soak kollu overnight. Add fresh water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles. Strain the water and keep the cooked kollu ready. It must be soft but not mushy.
- Heat a pan and dry roast red chillies, coriander seeds, urad dal and chana dal until golden brown. Allow it to cool and grind it into a coarse powder. In a pan heat oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, asafoetida and curry leaves.
- Add the cooked kollu followed by salt & the ground spice powder. Mix well. Finally add grated coconut and cook for a few minutes. Switch off the flame.
Thats it!! Kollu Sundal is ready!!
Serve hot!!
Tips:
- The sundal podi/spice powder gives a very nice flavour to the Kollu Sundal. Do not skip it.
- Soaking the kollu atleast for 8 hours helps in cooking it easily. Else u might have to cook for a longer time.
This kollu sindal looks absolutely divine, Sundari. A must try recipe for me.
