Spicy Ammini Kozhukattai is an easy kozhukattai variety. It can be made sweet or spicy. Having posted 2 sweet kozhukattais, thought of posting this spicy one. If u dont have a sweet tooth unlike me, this is specially for you!! This is very easy to make too. Usually this is done with the left over dough after making Mothagam. This serves as a good tea time snack as well..
Now to the recipe…
[Preparation Time-15 mins : Cooking Time- 15 mins]
Ingredients:
For the Ammini Kozhukattai:
- Rice Flour – 1 cup
- Water – 1 to 1 & 1/2 cups
- Salt – 1/4 tsp
- Milk – 1 tsp
- Oil – 1 tsp
For the Spice Powder:
- Dry red chillies – 3 to 4
- Chana Dal – 1 tbsp
- Urad Dal – 1 tbsp
- Sesame seeds – 1 tbsp
To temper:
- Oil – 1 tsp
- Mustard – 1 tsp
- Curry leaves – a sprig
- Asafoetida – a pinch
Other Ingredients:
- Salt – as required
- Grated Coconut – 2 tbsp
Method:
- Heat a pan and dry roast the ingredients mentioned under for spice powder until slightly brown. Once it cools down grind it into a coarse powder. Keep this aside.
- Dry roast the rice flour just until it is warm. Keep this aside. Heat a pan with water. Add salt, oil and milk to it. Let it boil. Simmer and add the rice flour stirring simultaneously.
- It will become thick very quickly. Mix until it forms like a dough. This will take a few mins only. Transfer it to a wide bowl and press it with your hands to form a smooth dough while it is still warm. Keep it covered.
- Grease your hands with little oil. Take a very small sized dough and make a small ball. Make the same with the rest of the dough. Steam it in an idli pot or steamer for 7-8 mins.
- U can see that it will become shiny once it gets cooked. Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard, curry leaves and asafoetida. To this add the cooked ammini kozhukattai and saute.
- Add the spice powder and mix well. Finally add grated coconut and fry for a minute.
Thats it!! Spicy Ammini Kozhukattai is ready!!
Serve warm!!
Tips:
- Do not over cook the Ammini Kozhukattai. Else it will become hard and rubbery.
- U can add coconut while roasting for the spice powder and skip it in the last stage.
- Make equal sized balls to ensure even cooking.
- As already mentioned, u can also the left over dough after making Mothagam to make this Spicy Ammini Kozhukattai.
