Vazhakkai Chips – Raw Banana Chips

Vazhakkai Chips is an easy snack to make at home. I had been wanting to make Vazhakkai Chips since a long time. Unfortunately, the raw banana that we get here has a slight fruity flavour, may be because of the transportation time. But this time, it was really good so immediately made a batch of chips and it really vanished in no time. Not much effort is needed in making this, u just need to peel, slice, fry and season the Vazhakki Chips with salt and chilli powder.

Now to the recipe..

Method:

  • Peel the raw banana and keep it immersed in water. Use a slicer and slice the raw banana and keep this immersed in water as well. Meanwhile heat a pan with oil enough to deep fry. Take a batch of the sliced raw banana and pat it dry with a kitchen towel. Drop these in hot oil.

  • Fry it in medium flame, stirring in between for even cooking until the bubble and the sshh sound ceases. Drain it in paper towels. Continue the same with the rest of the batches. Take a small bowl, add salt and chilli powder. Mix it well and add this to each batch of fried Vazhakkai Chips. Toss well.

Tips:

  1. U can slice the raw banana directly into hot oil and skip the step of immersing in water and pat drying. Make sure the oil is hot and reduce the flame while slicing it into oil so that u dont get the heat from high flame.
  2. I did not do it directly into hot oil, because my slicer was not that good. I had to do the slicing patiently to get uniform slices.
  3. If the slices are not thin, u might not get crispy Vazhakkai Chips.
  4. U can add salt and pepper powder instead of chilli powder too.
  5. Make sure to transfer the Vazhakkai Chips to an air-tight container after each batch cools completely.
