Vazhaipoo Vadai – Banana Flower Vada

February 6, 2018 Snacks / StartersVazhaipoo Recipes  4 comments

Vazhaipoo Vadai has been in my list since a long time. Finally made it. This is quite similar to Masal Vadai with a few changes in the ingredients. And as the name suggests Vazhaipoo is the star of this recipe. Vazhaipoo or Banana Flower is a veggie that all might like, especially because of its long cleaning process. I had recently posted about how to clean it. Once you are done with that process this Vadai is an easy one. Trust me these vadais with Vazhaipoo are so crispy.

Here is the video…

Now to the recipe..

Vazhaipoo Vadai Ingredients:

  • Chana Dal – 2 cups
  • Vazhaipoo – 1 cup (cleaned/chopped) Click HERE for how to clean it.

  • Salt – as needed
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
  • Asafoetida – a generous pinch
  • Oil – to fry

Method:

  • Clean the vazhaipoo as mentioned in the link above. Keep it immersed in buttermilk until use. Soak chana dal for 2 hours. Drain the water and add it to the mixer jar.

  • Grind it coarsely with very little water just for ease of grinding. Transfer it to a wide bowl. Add chopped vazhaipoo, salt, curry leaves & asafoetida. Mix well so that all the ingredients blend well.

  • Take a small ball sized dough and flatten it like patties. Drop it in hot oil and fry until crisp and golden brown on both the sides. Drain it in paper towels.

Thats it! Crispy Vazhaipoo Vadai ready!

Serve hot!

Tips:

  1. No need to add onions. Vazhaipoo will make the vadas crispier.
  2. Do not add more water to grind the Chana Dal. Else it will be difficult to shape the Vazhaipoo Vadai. If at all the dough is watery, add some rice flour or corn flour for binding. Moreover the vazhaipoo will let out some water.
  3. Do not make the vadais very thick. Else it will be crispy outside and uncooked inside.
