This Payatham Mavu Murukku is a crunchy, tasty and simple snack. With Gokulashtami around the corner (Sep 5th, Saturday), I could just manage to post this easy savoury recipe after my vacation. With simple ingredients, this Moong Flour Murukku can be made very quickly. I have used store bought rice flour and moong flour, as I did not have time to make at home.

Now to the recipe…

[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time- 30 mins]

Ingredients:

  • Rice Flour – 2 cups
  • Moong Dal Flour – 1/3 cup
  • Butter – 1 tbsp (in room temperature)
  • Jeera/Cumin Seeds – 1 tbsp
  • Salt – as needed
  • Hing/Asafoetida – a generous pinch
  • Oil – to deep fry

Method:

  • Sieve both the flours 2-3 times to get a smooth flour. Take rice flour, moong dal flour, salt, hing, butter and cumin seeds in a wide bowl. Mix well so that all the ingredients blend with each other.

  • Add water little by little to make a soft dough. I used the single star press to make the murukku. U can use the multi star press too. Meanwhile heat a pan with oil enough to deep fry.

  • Grease the murukku press with little oil. Take a handful of dough in a murukku presser. Press it over the back side of a ladle or directly into the hot oil.

  • Add 3-4 murukkus in a batch. Do not over crowd the oil. Deep fry it until the oil stops sizzling. Drain it in paper towels. Let it cool completely.

Tips:

  1. U can either use store bought or home made flours.
  2. Do not skip to sieve the flours. This way the flour will be smooth without lumps or granules.
  3. U can add sesame seeds instead of cumin seeds.
  4. Do not add more butter than mentioned above. Else the Moong Flour Murukku will crumble and it will break in between while swirling.
  5. Ensure oil is hot when u deep fry.
