Lachha Paratha – Wheat Parotta

January 24, 2016 Roti/Paratha  13 comments

Making Parotta at home was a long time dream for me. This Lachha Paratha is a layered paratha made with whole wheat flour. We used to buy frozen parathas earlier. But after trying this Lachha Paratha, no more buying frozen ones. These are much healthier and easier to make too.. Goes well with any gravy side dish.

Do check my options for side dish HERE..

Now to the recipe…

[Preparation Time-10 mins : Cooking Time-20 mins]

Ingredients:

  • Wheat Flour – 2 cups
  • Ghee – 1 tsp + 2 tbsp (for making paratha)
  • Salt – as needed
  • Water – as needed

Method:

  • Take wheat flour, salt, ghee in a wide bowl and mix well so that the salt and ghee is blended well with the flour. Add water little by little and make a soft dough. Pinch a small sized dough and make a ball.

  • Flatten it just like a normal chapathi. Make it as thin as possible. Now apply little ghee on the surface of the chapathi with your fingers or a pastry brush. Sprinkle some flour on it evenly.

  • Start folding the chapathi from one end just like making fleats till the other end. After fully done, roll it like a coil as shown in the pic. Seal it the end on the top or bottom (sorry missed that pic.. )

  • Now flatten the rolled dough with light hands to make Lachha Paratha. Heat a tava and place the paratha on it. Apply little ghee and cook evenly on both sides until golden brown.

Tips:

  1. U can use oil in place of ghee. But ghee is recommended.
  2. Make sure to make the chapathi and the fleats as thin as possible. Only then u will get more layers.
  3. After making the fleats, do not apply much pressure to flatten it so that the layers are visible.
  4. Cook the Lachha Paratha in low-medium flame. Press it with a ladle for even cooking.
  5. After making the parathas, crush it with your hands from both sides, just like how they do it in restaurants. This way the layers will be more prominent.

I love the flakey Layered Lachha Paratha recipe. Could not resist the look and feel hence proceeded to try it out. It was well worth the little effort. Lachha paratha can also be served with your favorite curry or dry vegetable dish. Delicious!
