Keerai Sambar is a simple and quick sambar variety for rice. I love all kinds of spinach/keerai. Its very healthy and a good source of iron. U can use any type of spinach including fresh methi leaves (Vendhaya Keerai).. All u need to do is to dump all the ingredients into a cooker and add some tempering and fried onions once its cooked. Keerai Sambar would be ready.
Now to the recipe…
Keerai Sambar Ingredients:
- Spinach/Keerai – 1 bunch
- Toor Dal – 1 cup
- Onion – 1
- Tomato – 1
- Oil – 2 tbsp
- Tamarind paste – 1 tsp
- Mustard – 1 tsp
- Urad Dal – 1 tsp
- Asafoetida/Hing – 1/4 tsp
- Red Chilly – 1
- Turmeric powder – a pinch
- Sambar powder – 1 tbsp
- Salt – as needed
Method:
- Wash and clean spinach, chop roughly and keep aside. In a pressure pan take toor dal along with spinach, red chilly, chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and half the asafoetida. Add water and pressure cook for a whistle and simmer it for 5 mins.
- Once the pressure releases mash the toor and spinach mixture. To this add sambar powder, salt and tamarind juice and let it boil for sometime.
- Meanwhile, heat a pan with oil and saute sliced onions until they are transparent. Add this to the boiling sambar. Finally in the same oil temper with mustard, urad dal and hing and add this to the sambar. Let it boil for a few mins.
That’s it, simple and flavourful keerai sambar is ready. Serve hot with steamed rice.
Tips:
- Add less water, just enough to cook the toor dal. Its enough for the spinach to get cooked too.
- U can use any spinach variety. If using methi leaves – Do not chop them as it will taste bitter.
- U can skip the onions for a No Onion-No Garlic version of keerai sambar.
