Method:

  • Soak toor dal in hot water for 20 mins. Heat a pressure cooker with oil. Temper with mustard, urad dal, fenugreek seeds and curry leaves. Add sambar onions and slit green chillies. Saute until onions turn transparent. Now add cubed potatoes and carrots and saute. Add wheat rava and roast for a few seconds until a nice aroma comes from it.

  • Add the soaked toor dal, tamarind extract, sambar powder, required salt and 3 1/2 cups of water. Mix well  and check for salt. The water should be salty so that it will be correct after the wheat rava is cooked. Pressure cook for 1 whistle and simmer for 5 mins.Switch off the flame. Once the pressure releases mix well.

Tips:

  1. Do not skip to soak toor dal for atleast 20 mins. Else it will not get mashed well while pressure cooking.
  2. Alternatively u can cook the toor dal separately and add it along with the water/tamarind extract mixture too.
  3. U can add other veggies like beans, peas etc.
  4. Instead of pressure cooking, u can cook it covered in a heavy bottom pan too.
