Aval Upma or Poha Upma is an easy breakfast/dinner recipe. It can be served as an evening snack too. Its a quick last minute recipe that comes to your rescue, when you are busy with other things and dont want to spend much time in the kitchen. Do try my puliyodharai style Puli Aval recipe HERE

Aval Upma My Magic Pan

Aval Upma Ingredients:

  • Aval/Poha – 1 cup
  • Onion – 1
  • Green chilly – 2
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Mustard – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – 1 tbsp
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Salt – as needed
  • Turmeric Powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Lemon juice – from 1/2 a lemon
  • Corinder leaves –  to garnish

Method:

  • Wash aval/poha and drain the water completely. Soak it in water just about immersing level for 10 mins. Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard & urad dal. Then add chopped onions, curry leaves & slit green chillies and saute till onions are transparent. Finlly add turmeric powder and mix.

  •  By this time aval/poha would have absorbed all the water. Add this to the onions, add required salt and mix well. Cook covered in low flame for a few mins. Finally add lemon juice and switch off the flame. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves.

Aval/Poha Upma is ready. Serve hot.

Tips:

  1. U can add vegetables of your choice to this upma.
  2. Do not soak the aval/poha for a longer time, else they will turn mushy.
  3. U can add grated coconut as per your choice.
