Adai Upma – Upma with Adai Batter

September 21, 2015 Breakfast/Dinner  12 comments

Adai Upma is an easy breakfast/dinner recipe. I simply love this Adai Upma, when compared to other upmas like Aval Upma or Semiya Upma!! Whenever I make Adai , we prefer to have it for 1 or 2 servings only. After that I make this Upma which we enjoy much better than Adai. It also serves as a good use of the leftover batter. Once u try this recipe, u will prefer to reserve a portion of adai batter to make this from next time 🙂

Now to the recipe…

Adai Upma My Magic Pan

[Preparation Time-15 mins : Cooking Time- 30 mins]

Adai Upma Ingredients:

  • Adai Batter – 2 cups (Check my Adai recipe HERE)
  • Onion – 2
  • Red chillies – 3 to 4
  • Grated Coconut – 3 tbsp
  • Oil – 3 tbsp
  • Mustard – 1 tsp
  • Urad Dal – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Salt – as needed

Method:

  • Grease idli plates and pour the adai batter in each hole. Steam cook just like idlis. It will take 12-15 mins. Once cooked, take it off the idli plates and allow it to cool.

  • Now crumble the idlis with your hands. Keep it ready. Heat a pan with oil and temper with mustard, urad dal, red chillies and curry leaves.

  • Add chopped onions and saute until transparent. Now add the crumbled idlis and saute in medium flame for a few mins.

  • Add grated coconut and saute for a few mins until it is slightly roasted and separated. It should not be sticky.

Thats it!! Adai Upma is ready!!

It tastes divine to sip a hot cup of coffee for every mouthful!!

Tips:

  1. While steaming the adai batter as idlis, it will take a little longer time to cook than the normal idlis.
  2. I have not added any salt, as the adai batter had enough salt in it. U can check salt and add accordingly.
  3. U can add green chilles instead of red chillies too.
  4. The more you fry this upma, the better it tastes.
  5. Sesame/Gingely oil is best for this Adai Upma.
